New customer had two shanks broken on Essex baby grand after a move. Don’t know how. Besides the point. Replaced with new Hamburg shank/flange. Came back to Regulate affected notes. What is this “thunk/click”? Only noisy on one of two I repaired. Help appreciated.

Perhaps one of these: blow distance too low (shank on rail causing hammer tail to hit wippen flange screw) raise capstan to get shank off rest cushion, hammer rest rail screws loose causing clicking when the shank drops.

On both of the videos, the tail of the hammer is hitting the wippen screw. Use a heat gun to bend the hammer tail away from the screw.

Zooming in on the video the hammer head may have been installed slightly too close to the key side causing the tail to contact the screw. Suggest to disconnect the hammer head and reglue so both the hammer head and the lower part of the tail line up with the neighbouring hammers.

Thank you! I think I just blanked. Even though visually it appeared that the hammer tail was not hitting the wippen flange It helped to raise the capstan. ( The piano needs a complete regulation and all neighboring shanks were resting on the rail and I just didn’t think it through enough). My experience thus far has only been to repair shanks. This is the first time I have replaced a broken shank with new shank to existing hammer. While my positioning of the hammer was fine from left to right my fore and aft left a little to be desired. This is also what contributed to the problem. After gluing the hammer tail ended up drifting in thus making it closer to the wippen flange as well. I had to sand a little off the inner side of the hammer tail and adjust the backcheck accordingly. Unwanted noise gone though!! Thanks for the quick replies.
So I do a better job next time beforehand, how do I ensure an accurate hammer angle next time? Is there a jig? What tips and techniques do you all recommend for ensuring hammers match their neighbors? Thanks again.

To maintain the position of newly glued together parts as the glue is drying it can be helpful to use masking tape.

Wish I had thought of that. Will keep that in mind for future.

Heather. It takes a little experience, but doing visually and matching the newly hung hammer to the one next to it is the best way. The hole in the hammer should be slightly bigger than the shank to allow you to adjust the for and aft angle.

Shanks should not be on the rest rail...correct that first...

Many new pianos require Hammer/String Distance adjustments fairly soon if the dealer fails to do their prep work. The Steinway Dealer I tune for is real good about prepping "all" the new pianos whether they are Kawais or Steinways but not so much with other dealers.
